Arteriole supply of the heart Flashcards
Arterial supply of the heart
Coronary arteries
Coronary arteries
- First branch of the ascending aorta
First part of the aorta
Ascending aorta
Where does the ascending aorta begin?
Aortic valve
Where is the ascending aorta located
obliquely and just to the left of the midline at the level of 3rd intercostal space
Where does the ascending aorta end?
terminates as it exits the fibrous pericardium at the sternal angle
How many branches does the ascending aorta Have?
Normally only has two branches - R and L coronary artery
Where do the 2 branches of the ascending aorta originate from?
[R and L coronary artery]
they arise from the right and the left aortic sinuses. Which are outperchings of the aortic wall, above each cusp of the aortic valve
What do the coronary arteries supply?
Supply the atria and ventricles
- Myocardium
- Epicardium
the atrial branches of the coronary arteries are usually ______ and not ________
small
readily apparent in a cadaver heart
Left coronary artery pathway
- Arises from the left aortic sinus
- Passes between the left oracle and the left side of the pulmonary trunk
- Also runs in the coronary sulcus
- Short artery before it splits and branches at the superior end of the anterior inter-ventricular groove, into a circumflex branch and anterior inter ventricular branch
Right coronary artery pathway
- Arises from the right aortic sinus of the ascending aorta
- passes to the right of the pulmonary trunk running in the coronary sulcus
What does the left coronary artery supply
The left atrium, most of the left ventricle, parts of the right ventricle, most of the inter ventricular septum (including the AV bundle of the conducting system of the heart) and the SA node in +/- 40% of people
Cardiac dominance/ coronary arteriole dominance
Defined by the vessel which gives rise to the posterior interventricular artery which supplies the myocardium of the inf. 1/3rd of the interventricular septum
Most hearts are ______ dominant
Right
Most hearts are right dominant.
What does this mean?
The posterior interventricular artery is supplied by the right coronary artery. this means that the R and the L coronary artery share equal supply to the heart
about _____% of people are left dominant.
15
if people are left dominant what does it mean?
the posterior interventricular artery is a branch of the circumflex branch
about _____% of people are co-dominant.
18
18% of people are co-dominant.
What does this mean?
Both the left and right coronary arteries gives branches to course in or near to the posterior interventricular groove
