Venous Drainage Of The H And N Flashcards
What is the main vein that drains the scalp, face and neck?
IJV
Where does the IJV run from to?
Arises at the jugular foramen, runs along carotid sheath, joins subclavian veins, runs into braciocephalic vein and drains into the R side of the heart
How do the scalp and face veins connect to intracranial veins?
By venous connections with IC veins/plexus
At which sinus does the IJV arise from?
Sigmoid sinus
Where does the cavernous sinus lie?
Either side of the sella turcia
How are the sigmoid sinus and cavernous sinus connected?
Via dural venous sinuses
Are the cavernous sinus and pterygoid venous plexus IC or EC?
Cavernous sinus- IC,
pterygoid venous plexus- EC in infratemporal fossa
The facial vein is the main venous drainage of the face. What is its course?
Medial aspect of orbit, descends down face posteroinferiorly to drain into IJV
What drains the orbit? Where do they drain into?
Sup and inf opthalmic veins, drain into the cavernous sinus. (Some into facial vein)
What drains into the pterygoid plexus? How does it connect to the cavernous sinus?
Orbit, maxilla, nasal cavity.
Through emissary veins
How can superficial blood and infection from face and orbit get IC? What are two example of ad complications?
Draining into pterygoid plexus via emissary veins into cavernous sinus. Risk of cavernous sinus thrombosis and meningitis
Where does the pterygoid venous plexus drain into?
IJV
What is the EJV comprised of?
Sup temporal and post auricular
What level of fascia does the EJV run in in the neck?
Superficial cervical fascia
How are veins in the dense CT layer of the scalp connected to deep dural venous sinuses? What is the relevance of this?
Via emissary veins. Infections can spread from EC to IC
