Arterial Supply To The H And N Flashcards
Where does the common carotid arise from on the L and R?
L- directly from the arch of the aorta, R- from the brachiocepalic trunk
What does the braciocephalic trunk divide into?
Common carotid and R subclavian (supplies upper limb)
What structure doe the common carotid ascend up the neck in?
Carotid sheath
At what level does the common carotid bifuricate?
C4- upper margin of thyroid cartilage
What are the terminal branches of the common carotid?
Internal and external carotid
What is the first branch of the subclavian artery? Where does it go?
Vertebral artery- runs in front of C7 then enters into vertebral foramen (C6-1) and ascends the neck before entering foramen magnum and anastomoses at Circle of Willis
What is the second branch of the subclavian artery? What important branch must be careful with in surgery? Why?
Thyrocervical trunk, inferior thyroid artery supplies inf thyroid, important relationship to RLN
Generally, what does the ECA supply?
Scalp, face and neck
Through what does the ICA enter the base of the skull?
Carotid canal
How many branches does the ECA have? What are they?
8- superior thyroid, ascending pharyngeal, lingual, facial, occipital, posterior auricular, maxillary, sup temporal
“Some Anatomist Like Freaking Out Poor Medical Students”
What are the two terminal branches of the ECA?
Sup temporal and maxillary
What is the blood supply to the scalp?
ECA- post.auricular, occipital and sup.temporal.
ICA- supratrochlear and supraorbital (come out though orbit)
How does the ICA enter the skull?
Through the carotid canal
What is contained in the carotid sinus and body?
Sinus- baroreceptors that detect changes in arterial BP,
Body- peripheral chemoreceptors that detect arterial 02
Where is a common site for atheroma formation? What can result?
Bifurication of common carotid. Risk of TIA/ stroke from clot rupture
