Venous Drainage Flashcards
What do capillaries drain into?
Venules which drain into veins
What are the largest two veins that drain into the heart?
Superior and inferior vena cava
What do veins have instead of branches?
They contain tributaries
What are some examples of the superior vena cava tributaries?
The internal jugular vein and the subclavian vein
What does the internal jugular vein drain?
Most of the head and neck
What does the subclavian vein drain>
The upper limb
What does the internal jugular and subclavian vein join together to form?
A Brachiocephalic vein on each side of the body
What is the Azygos system?
Drains the posterior thoracic wall and also drains into the superior vena cava
What are the main tributaries of the inferior vena cava?
Renal, lumbar and hepatic veins
How is the inferior vena cava (IVC) formed?
Formed from the common iliac veins
What do the common iliac veins drain?
Structures of the lower limb and pelvis
What is the portal venous system?
A collection of veins which drain into the liver before draining into the IVC
Where do the collection of veins in the portal venous system originate from?
The digestive organs within the abdomen
What does the deoxygenated blood contain in the venous system?
Nutrients and waste that has been absorbed along the GI tract
How is the blood filtered in the portal venous system?
By the liver
