Introduction To the Cardiovascuar System Flashcards
What is the cardiovascular system made up of?
Heart, blood vessels and blood
What are the two types of circulatory systems?
Pulmonary and systemic systems
What is the specialised heart muscle?
Myocardium
What does contraction of the heart muscle do?
Pushes blood out of the chambers
What does relaxation of the heart do?
Allows blood to flow or be pushed into the heart
Contraction of the ventricles =
Systole
Relaxation of the ventricles =
Diastole
What is pulmonary related to?
The lungs
What pressure is used for pulmonary circulation?
Low pressure
What would happen if there was high pressure in the pulmonary capillaries?
Would force fluid out of the blood and into the lung tissues and you could drown
What does the blood pumped to the lungs from the right ventricle contain?
Very low oxygen
Where does the blood leave the heart?
Through the pulmonary trunk
Where does oxygenation occur?
In the lungs
How does oxygenated blood enter the heart from the lungs?
Thorough pulmonary veins entering the left atrium
What does the systemic circulation feed into?
Into and out of all the organs except the lungs
