What is the sternal angle?
The joint between the manubrium of the sternum and the sternal body
What are the underlying structures at the level of the sternal angle?
Arch of the aorta, the bifurcation of the trachea, the second rib, the pulmonary trunk and nerves
What does the superior boarder reach?
The third costal cartilage on the right side of the sternum and the second intercostal space on the left side of the sternum
Where does the right margin of the heart extend to?
From the right third costal cartilages to near the right sixth costal cartilage
Where does the left margin of the heart descend laterally from?
The second intercostal space to the apex located near the midclavicular line in the fifth intercostal space
Where does the lower margin of the heart extend to?
From the sternal end of the right sixth costal cartilage to the apex in the fifth intercostal space near the midclavicular line
