What is hypertension?
High blood pressure
What can hypertension result in if not treated?
Coronary thrombosis, stroke and renal failiure
What are the two types of hypertension?
Primary and secondary
What is the cause of primary hypertension?
It is unknown
What is primary hypertension linked to?
Smoking, obesity and is often attributed to the western diet
What is the most common type of hypertension?
Primary - 95% of cases
What is secondary hypertension caused by?
A specific abnormality in one of the organs or systems of the body
What is the first line of treatment for hypertension?
Lifestyle changes to reduce the amount of salt in their diet
What is given if the first treatment doesn’t work?
Beta blockers, ACE inhibitors, calcium antagonists and diuretics
