Organisation Of The Vascular System Flashcards
What is the cardiovascular system made up of?
Heart, blood vessels and blood
Describe the pulmonary circulation
Where the deoxygenated blood will travel through the pulmonary arteries to the lungs
In the pulmonary circulation how does the oxygenated blood retain to the heart?
Through the pulmonary veins
Describe the systemic circulation
Where the arterial (oxygenated) blood travels to peripheral structures to supply them with nutrients. Venous deoxygenated blood then returns to the heart
What is the vascular system?
About the blood vessels of the human body
Where do the great vessels emerge from?
The heart and then split into smaller and smaller arteries
What do small arteries branch into?
They form into tiny arteries with diameters of 0.1-0.5mm
After arteries what do they narrow into?
High resistance vessels called arterioles
What do arterioles branch into?
Capillaries
What component is the primary site of diffusion of nutrients and waste products between the blood and tissues?
Capillaries
What do capillaries converge into?
Venules
What do venules converge into?
Veins which end up at the venae cavae
What does the venae cavae do?
Return blood to the right atrium and the pulmonary veins which return blood to the left atrium
What are the vessels coming from your heart part of?
The dynamic system which regulates blood pressure and blood flow throughout your body
