What is Henoch-Schonlein purpura?
A
- an IgA mediated small vessel vasculitis. There is a degree of overlap with IgA nephropathy (Berger’s disease).

What are the clinical features of HSP? How should they be managed?
A
- more common in children (boys>girls)
- Often follows a respiratory infection
- Presents with palpable purpuric rash over buttocks and extensor surfaces of arms and legs
- abdominal pain (may mimic acute abdo)
- join pain (polyarthritis)
- features of IgA nephropathy: glomerulonephritis - haematuria, renal failure
Refer to paeds - supportive care. Usually self-limiting, most fully recover over a few months.
