Vascular System & Lymph Nodes Flashcards
(34 cards)
which veins provide superficial venous drainage of the neck
external jugular and anterior jugular
which 2 veins join to form the external jugular and where
the posterior auricular vein and the retromandibular vein join behind the angle of the mandible to form the external jugular vein
what does the posterior auricular vein drain?
drains the scalp behind and above the ear
which 2 veins join to form the retromadibular vein and where
the superficial temporal vein and the maxillary veins join in the parotid gland. They travel to the angle of the mandible and divide into an ant. and post. division. The post division joins with the post. auricular to from the jugular, the ant joins the facial nerve to form the common facial vein which drains into the internal jugualr

where does the external jugular travel?
in the superficial fascia (above the SCM), when right above the clavicle it goes behind the SCM and pierces the investing layer of cervical fascia and enters the subclavian vein
what do the anterior jugular veins drain? Where do they meet?
the anterior aspect of the neck. They meet just superior to the hyoid bone.
what forms the jugular venous arch
the communictaion between the right and left anterior jugular veins. Right above the suprasternal notch
explain where the right common carotid comes from
from the brachiocephalic trunk (just behind the sterno clavicular joint) and is always in the neck
explain where the left common carotid comes from
it begins in the thorax as a branch off the aorta and passes superiorly to enter the neck near the left sternoclavicular joint
where do the common carotid arteries divide into external and internal carotid arteries?
near the superior edge of the thyroid cartilage
what innervates the carotid sinus
IX
what innervates the carotid body
IX, X
what 3 anterior branches does the external carotid give off
the superior thyroid artery, the lingual artery and the facial artery
what does the superior thyroid artery supply?
the superior pole of the thyroid gland
what does the lingual artery supply?
it passes deep to XII and between the middle constrictor and hypoglossus muscles
what does the facial artery supply
passes deep to the stylohyoid and post belly of digastric muscles, deep the submandibular gland and mandible, and emerges over the edge of the mandible anterior to the masseter muscle to enter the face
what are the 3 posterior branches of the external carotid artery
ascending pharyngeal artery, the occipital artery, and the posterior auricular artery
what does the occipital artery supply?
posterior aspect of the scalp
what are the 2 terminal branches of the external carotid artery?
the superficial temporal artery and the maxillary artery
where does the maxillary artery end up?
pterygoplatine fossa
what are the components of the thyrocervical trunk? SITA
ascending cervical artery, transverse cervical artery, inferior thyroid artery, suprascapular artery
what are the veins making the internal jugular vein
the superior bulb of the jugular vein (sigmoid sinus), the inferior petrosal sinus
where does the internal jugular vein exit the skull
jugular foramen
