Vascular Dementia Flashcards
What is the other name for vascular dementia?
What causes it?
Multi-infarct dementia
Multiple ischaemic strokes
Neurons can survive in anaerobic states. T/F?
F - only in aerobic states
What form of necrosis occurs after an ischaemic stroke in the brain?
Liquefactive necrosis
How is it that symptoms can appear differently?
Depends on what region of the brain the stroke occurred in to what the symptoms are
How is the pattern of dementia symptoms different from Alzheimer’s?
Vascular - sudden and progresses with each stroke - stepwise progression
Alzheimer’s - chronic progression that gradually worsens
How is it managed?
What drug can be taken to reduce symptoms?
No way of reversing
Cholinesterase inhibitors e.g. rivastigmine and donepezil
Reduce risk of stroke
- stop smoking
- lower HTN
- lower cholesterol
How does it appear on MRI?
Evidence of small vessel disease and infarcts
