Anatomy - Skull Flashcards
What are the 5 layers of the scalp?
SCALP
Skin Connective tissue Aponeurosis Loose connective tissue Pericranium
In what layer of the scalp are the arteries of the scalp found?
Connective tissue - 2nd layer
What is the pterion?
What artery runs deep to it?
Thinnest part of the skull
H-shaped suture between
- frontal
- parietal
- temporal
- sphenoid
Middle meningeal artery
What nerve innervates MOST of the dura matter?
CN V - trigeminal
Irritation results in headache
What is the name of the dura mater that separates the two cerebral hemispheres?
Falx cerebri
What is the first branch of the subclavian artery that provides blood to the brain?
Vertebral artery
What are the two arteries that supply the brain?
Vertebral artery
Internal carotid artery
(external carotid artery supplies neck, face and scalp)
What artery is made up from right and left vertebral artery together?
Basilar artery
What artery supplies the visual cortex?
Posterior cerebral artery
What layer is the circle of Willis found in?
Subarachnoid space - so its bathed with CSF
What is the function of the arachnoid granulations?
To reabsorb CSF
What is the definition of hydrocephalus?
Increase in CSF volume
(due to either;
- increase in production
- inadequate reabsorption
- obstruction to flow)
How is hydrocephalus managed?
Ventricular peritoneal shunt
Shunt catheter from ventricles into the peritoneal cavity
What are the 3 categories of bleeding in the cranial cavity?
Extradural
Subdural
Subarachnoid
