Anatomy - Cranial Nerves Flashcards
All nerves exit anteriorly apart from what two?
CN IV - exits posteriorly
CN VIII - exits laterally
Where is the primary olfactory area found?
Frontal and temporal lobe
What is the only nerve is directly exposed to external environment?
CN I - olfactory in nasal cavity
What cranial nerves have parasympathetic fibres?
CN III
CN VII
CN IX
CN X
What is the only CN to attach to the pons?
Trigeminal nerve
What is the only branch of the trigeminal nerve that has motor supply?
CN V3 - mandibular - used for muscles of mastication, tensor tympani of middle ear and one in soft palate (think about popping ur ears)
What is the role of the chorda tympani nerve and what is it a branch of?
Where does it pass through initially?
Responsible for special sensory innervation of tongue and supplies presynaptic parasympathetic to submandibular and sublingual salivary glands
Facial - CN VII
Middle ear
What nerve is responsible for supplying muscles of facial expression?
CN VII - facial nerve
To - temporal Zanzibar - zygomatic By - buckle Motor - mandibular car - cervical
What nerve supplies visceral afferent to the carotid sinus baroreceptors and carotid body chemoreceptors?
CN IX - glossopharyngeal
What salivary gland does CN IX provide parasympathetic innervation to?
Parotid gland
What does the vagus nerve travel in through the neck?
Carotid sheath
Where does the left recurrent nerve loop around?
Aortic arch
How does the vagus nerve pass through the diaphgram?
Forms an oesphageal plexus and moves through with that
Where can the vagus nerve be found on the left and right sides of the thorax?
R - lateral aspect of trachea
L - lateral aspect of aortic arch
Where is the last place the parasympathetic innervation of the vagus nerve reaches?
Splenic flexure of the colon
