Validity Flashcards
What are examples of internal validity
Investigator effects, demand characteristics, confounding variable is, social desirability bias, poorly operationalise behavioural categories – all mean that a researcher may not be recording how people really think and behave
What are types of external validity
Population
Ecological
Temporal
What is population validity
Generalising from one sample to all people
What is ecological validity
Generalising a research effect from one setting to another. It is affected by how the DV is measured and whether participants are aware they are being studied
What is temporal validity
Generalising a research effect from one historical period to another
What are 2 methods to assess validity
Face validity
Concurrent validity
What is face validity
Whether a test or questionnaire items look like they are measuring what they claim to be measuring
What is concurrent validity
Checking if a test relates well with existing validated measures
How can you improve validity
Revise questions so they look more relevant, or advise and check concurrent validity again
Improved design, e.g. use double blind or more realistic task
