What is a case study
Study of one person, institution or event, often over a long period of time ( longitudinal studies)
Evaluate strengths of case studies
In-depth data may provide new insights
Instances of unusual behaviour can be investigated
Complex interaction of many factors studied
What methods are used in case studies
Objective and systematic methods used e.g. observation interviews and psychological testing
The target person or people may be involved also friends and family
Detailed information collected in terms of depth and breadth
Evaluate limitations of case studies
difficult to generalise from unique instances, may lack validity because of recollection involved, researchers may lack objectivity, ethical issues with confidentiality and over testing
