Valence electrons Flashcards
1
Q
Why are atoms neutral?
A
They do not have a charge because the number of protons equals the number if electrons
2
Q
Valence electrons
A
electrons in the outer most shell; the electrons that are involved in bending
3
Q
How to atoms become stable?
A
- by being like noble gases who do not react with other elements because their valence shells are already full
- can gain electrons to fill a shell
- can lose electrons to get rid of a shell exposing a full one underneath
4
Q
Ions
A
atoms that have a charge because they have gained or lost electrons to become stable with a full valence shell
5
Q
Cations
A
lose electrons (+)
6
Q
Anions
A
gains electrons (-)
7
Q
How are valence electrons involved in the formation of cations and anions?
A
If you add or take away a certain amount of protons and neutrons it can make a stable shell, anions are with a negative charge and cations with a positive charge
