Measurements and Dimensional Analysis Flashcards
Significant figures rules
nonzero numbers are always significant
zeros between non-zero numbers are always significant
all final zeros to the right of the decimal are significant
placeholder zeros are not significant
Addition and subtraction
the number of decimal places in the result equals the number of decimal places in the least precise measurement
Multiplication and division
round the answer to the least # of sig figs in the problem
Qualitative observations
observation of where the person observes by their interpretation, by what they see
Precision
related to the reproducibility to the measurement
Accuracy
a comparison of the measured value to the accepted or true value
Scientific notation
the way that scientists easily handle very large numbers or very small numbers
Conversion factor
a statement used to change one set of units to another by multiplying or dividing
Base units
a defined unit in a system of measurement that is based on an object or event in the physical world.
