Chemical reactions Flashcards
Chemical reaction
the process by which the atoms of one or more substances are rearranged to form different substances
Why balance chemical equations?
Matter cannot be created or destroyed; Antoine Lavoisier made law of conservation of mass/matter
How to know when something is a chemical reaction?
Gas production, temperature change, color change, precipitate, energy change
What are the 5 types of chemical reactions?
Synthesis, Single Replacement, Combustion, Decomposition and Double Replacement
Synthesis
a compound is made from simpler materials
Decomposition
a compound is broken down into simpler compounds, or all way down to elements that make it up; opposite of synthesis reaction
Combustion
a compound containing carbon and hydrogen (and sometimes oxygen) combines with oxygen gas to produce carbon dioxide and water
Single Replacement
one element that starts out by itself replaces another element in a compound kicking it out
Double Replacement
the positive and negative ions in two compounds switch places
Synthesis equation
A+B—–> AB
Decomposition equation
AB——->A+B
Combustion equation
CxHy(O2)+CO2+H2O
Single Replacement equation
A+BC—->B + AC
Double Replacement equation
AB+CD—-> AD+BC
