the vacuole is bound by a single membrane called the tonoplast, which is observable under the light microscope. it is partially permeable and contains a fluid mixture, called the cell sap with dissolved substances

A
the vacuole helps to develop turgidity of the plant cell as it maintains a low water potential so that water molecules will enter the cell via osmosis. it also acts as a deposition site for metabolic waste products, and helps to store pigments and defensive compounds for plants
