the ribosomes appear spherical under the electron microscrope, and is comprised of 2 sub-units. it does not have a membrane so it is not an organelle

the ribosomes are sites of protein synthesis, where the synthesise the gene mRNA into a polypeptide to be transported to the rER. free ribosomes fold the polypeptide into a 3-dimensional conformation as the polypeptides are not transported to the rER
