cell membrane Flashcards
Describe the structure of the cell membrane
The cell membrane is has 4 phospholipid layers, with 2 being hydrophilic and the other 2 being hydrophobic. Glygoproteins and glycolipids are attached to the cell membrane, and carbohydrate side chains may be attached to the glycoproteins and glycoproteins or the surface of the cell membrane
What is the function of the cell membrane?
The cell membrane is partially permeable, which allows for the exchange of substances in and out of the cell. It also compartmentalises the cell to increase surface area to volume ratio to increase rate of diffusion and absorption of materials. This is so that the cell organelles can perform their functions simulatneously at an optimal environment
