Vaccination Flashcards
What does vaccination do
Protects from future infections
What are booster injections
Increase the levels of antibodies again when vaccinations wear off over time
What are the 2 pros of vaccination
1) They have helped to control lots of infectious diseases that were once common
2) Epidemics can be prevented if a large percentage of the population is vaccinated
Explain how vaccinations work
- Small amounts of dead/inactive microorganisms are injected into the body
- The microorganisms carry antigens which cause the body to produce antibodies to attack the, although this causes no damage
- If live microorganisms of the same type invade, the White blood cells can rapidly mass produce antibodies to kill the antigens
What are 2 cons of vaccination
Vaccines don’t always work because sometimes they don’t provide immunity
Sometimes, although rare, people can have a bad reaction to a vaccine
Explain how epidemics can be prevented by vaccinating a large portion of the population
Even those that aren’t vaccinated are less likely to catch the disease because there are fewer people able to pass it on
What happens if a significant amount of people aren’t vaccinated
Disease can spread quickly throughout them and becomes an epidemic
What is an epidemic
A big outbreak of disease
