Evolution Flashcards

1
Q

A

More than 3 million years ago life on earth began as simple organisms from which more complex organisms evolved

Q

What 2 factors make plants and animals different

A

Plants make their own food/ animals don’t

Plants are fixed in the ground but animals can move round

13
Q

Explain Natural Selection

A
  1. Individuals within a species show variation because of the differences in their genes sometimes caused by genetic mutations
  2. The individuals with the characteristics better suited to adapt to their environment have better survival chances and so are more likely to breed successfully - these genes will be passed on

Q

What effects does a mutation have

A

Sometimes causes a useful characteristic to be produced which can serve as an advantage

16
Q

What are 3 reasons people didn’t agree with Darwin

A
  1. His theory went against common religious beliefs
  2. Darwin couldn’t provide a suitable explanation for why the characteristics appeared etc
  3. There wasn’t enough evidence to convince many scientists
17
Q

What was Lamarck’s theory

A

That if a characteristic was used a lot by an organism then it would become more developed during its lifetime
Acquired characteristics would be passed to next generation

18
Q

Give an example of Lamarck’s theory

A

If a rabbit used its legs to run then its legs would get longer

19
Q

Why was Lamarck’s theory rejected

A

Experiments didn’t support his hypothesis

20
Q

Why did people accept Darwin’s theory

A

Discovery of genetics supported his idea and provided an explanation of how organisms born with beneficial characteristics can pass them on
