What does FSH do in the menstrual cycle
Causes an egg to mature in one of the ovaries and stimulates the ovaries to produce Oestrogen
What does LH do in the menstrual cycle
Stimulates the release of an egg at around the middle of the menstrual cycle
What does Oestrogen do in the menstrual cycle
Causes the pituitary gland to produce LH and inhibits further release of FSH
How many stages does the menstrual cycle have

What happens in stage 1 of the menstrual cycle
Bleeding starts
The uterus lining breaks down for around 4 days
What happens in stage 2 of the menstrual cycle
The lining if the uterus builds up again from day 4-14
What is stage 3 of the menstrual cycle
The release of an egg from the ovary on stage 14
What is stage 4 of the menstrual cycle
The maintaining of the wall for 14 days until day 28
What happens on day 28 of the menstrual cycle
If no fertilised egg has landed on the uterus wall by day 28 the spongy lining starts to break down again and the cycle re-begins
