The Nervous System Flashcards
What is a stimulus
A change in your environment which you may need to react to
What are your five different sense organs
Eyes Nose Tongue Ears Skin
What are receptors
Groups of cells which are sensitive to a stimulus. They change the stimulus energy into electrical impulses
What are the 2 main effectors
Muscles
Glands
What are light receptors
Things sensitive to light
What are sound receptors
Things sensitive to sound
What are smell receptors
Things sensitive to chemical stimuli
What are taste receptors
Things sensitive to different tastes (bitter, sweet, salty etc)
What are skin receptors
Things sensitive to touch, pressure, pain and temperature changed etc
What are sensory neurons
The nerve cells that carry signals as electrical impulses from the receptors in the sense organs to the CNS
What are relay neurons
The nerve cells that carry signals from sensory neurones to motor neurones
Motor neurons
The nerve cells that carry signals from the CNS to the effector
What does CNS stand for
Central Nervous System
What is the CNS
Where all the information from the sense organs is sent and where reflexes are coordinated
What does the CNS consist of
Brain
Spinal Cord
