Adaptations Flashcards
What does the needs to survive of a living organism depend on
The type of organism
What do plants need to survive and to make what
Light Oxygen Nutrients Carbon dioxide Water
To make glucose energy to survive
What do animals need to survive
Food from other animals
Water
Oxygen
What do microorganisms need to survive
Some like plants
Some like animals
Some don’t need oxygen or light
What does an adaptation allow
An organism to survive in a particular habitat
What are 3 adaptations of a desert animal
Large surface area -Allows them to lose more body heat which stops them overheating
Camouflage - keeps them hidden from prey and allows them to sneak up on predators
Good in hot conditions - very thin layers of body fat and a thin coat to help them lose heat
What are 3 adaptations for arctic animals
Small surface area - Have a compact shape to keep surface area at a minimum to reduce heat loss
Camouflage - Tend to blend in with white surroundings to hide from predators and sneak up on prey
Well insulated - Thick layer of blubber which acts for insulation and an energy source when food is scarce
Thick coat of fur to keep him insulated
2 adaptations of desert plants
Water storage tissues - Cacti store water in thick stem
Small surface area - Cacti have spikes instead of leaves to reduce loss of water vapour
Example of desert plants
Cacti
What is an adaptation for herbivores
Teeth for grinding up plant cells
What is an adaptation for carnivores
Teeth for tearing up flesh and grinding bones
What are 2 adaptations for deter predators from plants and animals
Armour - thorns and shells
Poisons - bees and poison ivy
