what is the treatment for females?
3 days of trimethoprim 200mg twice daily
or 3 days of nitrofurotoin 50mg x 4 or 100mg x 2 daily
what can be considered if trimethroprim has been given in the past year?
nitrofurotoin

7 day course

lots of fluids
what are the risk factors?
indwelling catheter past UTI unprotected sex stones- kidney, urethral diabetes enlarged prostate female- diaphragm (contraception) condoms with spermicidal lubricant surgery urethritis, vaginitis incomplete lbadder emptying
symptoms?
pain on urination itching increase in frequency dysuria odour -strong cloudy in appearance blood in urine supra-pubic tenderness nausea sweats feeling urge to go warm/burning sensation fatigue
investigations
urine dipstick -nitrites and leucocytes are elevated
cultures from urine
what is loin pain and fever associated with?
upper UTI-pyelonephritis
what can serious UTI cause
confusion
delirium
syncope
what is most common cause and what percentage?
80%
