what is hydronephritis?
A
swelling in the kidney causing urine build up
usually result of obstruction or blockage
urine cannot drain out

what age?
A
any age - including in utero (1 in 100 pregnancies)

what can this cause?
A
increases risk of UTI
if untreated can lead to loss of kidney function but rare

symptoms
A
can be asymptomatic can have pain -gradual onset or sudden in back or flanks unable to produce/reduced urine output haematuria swollen kidneys symptoms of UTI/pyelonephritis decreased urinary stream/weakened stream

diagnosis?
A
US
fbc- inflammatory marks raised for infection

causes
A
renal stones
pregnancy
enlarged prostate
narrow of urether- trapped stone, injury, infection, surgery, malignancy

treatment
A
in pregnancy self limiting - 4/5 resolve thsemleves
cancer- chemo
stones - surgery removal or break down using sound waves
prostate treatment via surgery or alpha 1 blockers of 5al reductase inhibitors
drain using cathether
