A
inhibits 5 alpha reductase which converts testosterone into dihydrotesterone
this causes shrinkage of the prostate and increases urinary flow

SE
A
gynaemastica prostate shrinkage increased risk of male breast cancer reduced libido hair growth

what is the preferred treatment? how long does effects of ths take to be seen?
A
up to 6 months
slow activity therefore alpha blockers preferred or combined therapy

warning/contraindications
A
can cause abnormal male genitalia development therefore do not let women who are likely to become pregnant be in contact e.g. partner is on this medication via unprotected sex
