alpha adrenoreceptor antagonists Flashcards
name two?
tamulosin, doxazosin
indication for use
[1] improvement symptoms in benign prostatic hyperplasia (1st line)
[2] add on treatment in resistant hypertension
what can be added to the treatment for indication 1
5 alpha reductase inhibitor
mechanism of action?
selective for alpha adreno receptors on smooth muscle of blood vessels and urinary tract (bladder neck and prostate).
stimulation induces contraction, blockade induces relaxation therefore alpha blockers induce vasodilation and reduce bp and resistance to bladder outflow is reduced
AE
syncope
postural hypertension
diziness
warning/contraindications?
not for those with postural hypertenshion
interactions
which drug is an ‘especially’
Additive effect with anti-hypertensives therefore use with caution to ensure hypotension doesn’t occur esp beta blockers
key consideration
many men with Benign prostatic hyperplasia also have hypertension so consider use of doxozin earlier in treatment plan so the patient is only on 1 medication for both conditions
