Tariff of 1789
designed to raise revenue for the federal government; resulted in a government surplus
Tariff of 1816
A protective tariff that helped American industry by raising the prices of British goods which were often cheaper and of higher quality than those of the U.S.
Tariff of Abominations
AKA Tariff of 1828; raised the tariff on imported manufactured goods. The tariff protected the North but harmed the South. The South claimed that it was discriminatory and unconstitutional

Compromise Tariff of 1833
A result of Henry Clay’s efforts to soothe South Carolina’s qualms about the Tariff of Abominations. It caused South Carolina to withdraw the ordinance nullifying the Tariffs of 1828 and 1832. Both protectionists and anti-protectionists accepted this compromise.
Tariff of 1842
A protective tariff signed by Tyler; it raised the general level of duties to about where they had been before the Compromise Tariff. Also banned pornography by increasing its costs
Walker Tariff
1846-sponsored by Polk’s secretary of the treasury, Walker. It lowered the tariff and introduced the warehouse system of storing goods until duties were paid.
McKinley Tariff
A highly protective tariff passed in 1880. So high it caused a public backlash and cost Republicans votes
Wilson-Gorman Tariff
Meant to reduce the McKinley Tariff and sought to create a graduated income tax; it was eventually ruled unconstitutional
Dingley Tariff
Passed in 1897-one of the highest protective tariffs in history; it was pushed through by big business in Northern citites
Payne-Aldrich Tariff
1909-it lowered the tariff to 38%. Democrats felt that it did not go far enough and subsequently passed the Underwood Tariff
Underwood-Simmons Tariff
1913-lowered tariffs on hundrfeds of items that could be produced more cheaply in the U.S. than abroad
Fordney-McCumber Tariff
1922-raised tariff rates
Hawley-Smoot Tariff
1930-highest tariff in U.S. history. It raised duties on agricultural and manufactured imports. It may have contributed to the spread of international economic depression
