A

The Supreme Court closed down the AAA, NRA and the PWA as they said they were undermining state laws and imposing too much control on peoples way of living.

When did the Supreme Court go against the NRA?

A

In 1935 the NRA found the Schechter Poultry Corporation guilty of breaking NRA laws by selling poor food, treating workers badly and filing false sales claims. They tried to close the firm down but the firm appealed to the Supreme Court. The court said that the NRA couldn’t interfere with state laws and allowed the firm to reopen.

What was FDR’s response to the Supreme Court clashing with the NRA?

A

FDR was outraged at the court and threatened to create 6 new judges who would support his policies in order to out vote the Republican judges. This alarmed the public who saw him behaving like a dictator. He couldn’t simply sack people he didn’t like. FDR was forced to back down as he seemed to be attacking the American system of Government.

A

The Supreme Court was rocked by FDR and in the future they were less obstructive. Most of FDR’S 2nd New Deal from 1937 onwards was accepted by the court.
