When were the first black Americans taken to the USA? Why?
The first black people were taken to America as slaves by white settlers in the 17th century.
What happened in 1861?
In 1861, 11 southern states decided that they were leaving the union as President Lincoln had decided to abolish slavery. Lincoln declared war on the states and for 5 years the USA was in a civil war.
Even though slavery had been abolished, why weren’t the lives of black people still not equal to those of whites?
Despite the fact that slavery had been abolished, many southern states continued to restrict the freedom of black people.
What gang was formed to intimidate black people?
The KKK was formed with an aim of keeping whites in control.
What does the KKK stand for?
Ku Klux Klan.
What happened in 1870 which effected black people?
The Amnesty Act in 1870 gave southern states more freedom which led to increased intimidation against blacks.
What happened to the KKK by the end of the 19th century?
It had declined dramatically.

It started up again after the release of the racist film “A Birth of a Nation”.
What happened in 1876?
The Jim Crow laws were passed which made blacks “separate but equal”. This meant that blacks and whites were strictly segregated in public places.
