Findings for a AOM:
Acute onset of signs and symtoms of AOM:
AOM signs and symptoms:
-Otorrhea –> Ear discharge
-Otalgia (ear pain)
Fever
-irritability
Presence of Middle eaar effusion:
-A tympanic membrane with: bulging, limited/absent mobility, air fluid level behind it, possible otorrhea
Signs of middle ear inflammation: otalgia or erythema (redness of the tympanic membrane)
Risk factors of AOM:
-<age 2
-Male
-Daycare attendence
-Non ventilated bottles
-Exposure to ciggs
-Genetics
-Premature birth
Brestfeeding
No exposure to ciggs, allergens and viruses
-Get flu vaccine and pneumococcal vacccine
What bacterias can cause AOM?
Gram + –> S.pneumonia
Gram - –> H.influenzae, Moxella catarrhs
6months old or <2yrs old with AOM with otorrhea what should we do?
Give antibiotics
6months old or <2yrs old with AOM with severe symptoms what should we do?
give antibiotics
6months old or <2yrs old with AOM with mild symptoms and no otorrhea what should we do?
follow up in 48-72 hrs
But if cannot follow up –> give antibiotics
Children >2yrs old with AOM + otorrhea what should we do?
Give antibiotics
Children >2yrs old with AOM + severe symtpms what should we do?
Give antibiotics
Children >2yrs old with AOM without otorrhea but with mild symptoms what should we do?
Follow up in 48-72 hrs
give antibiotics if severe symptoms
