urethra (male & female) Flashcards
4 main parts of male urethra
- Preprostatic
- prostatic (widest/ most dilatable)
- Membranous (shortest)
- Penile/ spongy (longest)
total length of male urethra
18-20 cm
Length of Male preprostatic urethra
1-1.5 cm
Length of Male prostatic urethra
3-4 cm Long (most dilatable/ widest)
Length of Male membranous urethra
1.5 cm (shortest)
Length of Male Penile/spongy urethra
15cm long (longest)
shape of male urethra from lateral view
S shaped/ double curve
Male urthera extends from ____ to ____
from Internal urethral orifice from bladder to external urethral orifice of penis
explain importance of smooth muscles surrounding preprostatic urethra
to form preprostatic sphincter:
prevents ejacultory retrograde into bladder
describe features of posterior wall of prostatic urethra
- Urethral crest: longituidal fusiform median ridge
- Prostatic sinus: groove on each side of urethral crest recieving prostatic duct opening
-
Seminal colliculus: elevation of urethral crest showing 3 openings:
1.Prostatic utricle: small pouch from median lobe of prostate
2.Two ejaculatory ducts on each side of the urethral crest
in formation of prostatic utricle, Median lobe of Prostate homologues to ____ in females
Uterus
Course of membranous urethra of male
- Begins at lower part of prostate (cont. of prostatic urethra)
- passes downwards & forewards in deep perineal pouch, laying between 2 membranes: Pelvic fascia above & perineal membrane below
- Becomes surrounded by Sphincter urethrae, to end in bulb of penis as Penile urethra
site of bulbourethral glands
on the sides of membranous urethra
Bulbourethral glands open in :
Penile/spongy urethra:
* by first piercing perineal membrane
Narrowest part of the whole urethra
external Urethral meatus
