urbanisation and industialisation - was this the reason britain became a more democratic country between 1851-1928 Flashcards
britain became a more democratic country between 1851 and 1928 due to the effects of industrialisation and urbanisation.
what is meant by urbanisation?
urbanisation was the influx of people who moved into towns and cities from the countryside due to increased access to jobs etc as a result of industrialisation
KU - In what year did what percentage of the British population lived and worked in towns and cities and by what year (and by how much) did this change
In 1850, 50% of the british population lived and worked in towns and cities and by 1900 this increased to 80%
KU - what did urbanisation and industrialisation mean for people who had similar ideas and what did it draw attention to?
Industrialisation and urbanisation meant that groups of likeminded people were brought together and there lack of political representation and influence was becoming clear.
people in the newly overcrowded cities had the same number of representatives as the now depopulated rural areas and this led to demand for redistribution of the seats
A - this therefor means that britain became more democratic between 1851 and 1928 due to the effects of industrialisation and urbanisation because….
it highlighted that redistribution of the seats was necessary and consequently more MP’s were allocated to growing cities and rural areas with declining populations lost some MP’s
The representation of the people act, 1918 drew constituency boundaries of approximately 70,000 people per MP and this increased the number of constituencies and therefor MP’s in parliament
A+ - However britain did not become a more democratic country between 1851 and 1928 due to the effects of industrialisation and urbanisation because…

Upon evaluation britain began to become more democratic between 1851 and 1928 due to the effects of industrialisation and urbanisation……
secondly - what act was introduced, when and why was this significant
this was because the influx of people into cities was what ultimately triggered political changes as people began to recognised there situations were both similar and wrong
the education act, 1870 led to the growth of government funded schools and with education came greater political understanding. ordinary people realised they deserved a say in british politics
