universal suffrage did exist in Britain and atempts to end bribery, corruption and intimidation were made such as with the secret ballot act 1872 which allowed voting to take place in the privacy of voting booths.
the introduction of payment for working MP’s also led to Britain becoming more democratic as it meant the working class and others who couldn’t previously afford to stand as a candidate now could.

however, industrialisation and urbanisation also played a very important role in the growth of democracy in Britain and this essay will argue that industrialisation and urbanisation was the most important factor leading to Britain becoming a more democratic country between 1851-1928
