Q

A - This therefor means britain did become more democratic between 1851 - 1928 but because of the advantage political party’s could gain over each other with the introduction of democratic changes…

A

The liberal party felt that the wealthier conservative candidates had the ability to bribe voters and so they supported the corrupt and illegal practices act 1883 which introduced limits to election spending and the liberals remained in power until 1885 before entering a coalition with the conservatives

Q

A+ - however, britain was not more democratic between 1851 and 1928 because of party political advantage due to the fact that….

A

supporting more democratic acts didn’t alwayse work in their favour and often only had a positive impact on a minority of people. Some working class men for example recieved the vote in 1867 but not all and the conservatives aim to regain power ultimately failed.
old fashioned forms of bribery still existed such as with alcohol despite introduction of laws to prevent it and so didn’t completely help the liberals

Q

E part 1 - upon evaluation, party political advantage led to some positive changes such as…

A

the liberals extension of the vote to more working class men in 1884 (third reform act) which allowed them to gain more votes and stay in power for longer. however had it not been for urbanisation and industrialisation drawing attention to the need for democracy, party’s would not have been so keen to introduce changes that in hand would gain them more votes.

Q

E part 2 - why might party’s not have been so keen to introduce change had it not been for industrialisation and urbanisation

A

industrialisation and urbanisation led to groups such as trade unions being created and they drew even more attention towards the demands of ordinary people that may not have been acknolaged had it not been for industrialisation and urbanisation
