bribery, intimidation and corrupt practices
KU - before 1872 how did men vote
before 1872, men voted in public which led to intimidation and being threatened with loss of homes or jobs if, for example, they didn’t support the choice of their employer

The secret ballot act, 1872 introduced voting in secret in polling booths and the process became peaceful and orderly
KU - what act introduced limits and control to election spending and what was the punishment for a breach of this?
The corrupt and illegal practices act 1883
a breach of this disqualified a candidate for 7 years
why did attempts to end corruption and intimidation support Britain in becoming a more democratic country
because voters within a democracy MUST be able to cast votes without being threatened or watched
why did the attempts made to end corruption and intimidation (prior to 1918) not help britain in becoming a more democratic country
despite the introduction of both the secret ballot and corrupt and illegal practice acts, bribery and intimidation wasn’t completely removed from the political process
the punishment o disqualification of candidates also caused problems
overall where the attempts to end corruption and intimidation successful thus making Britain a democratic country by 1918
despite obviously significant attempts to end corruption and intimidation, old forms of bribery still occurred such as with alcohol and weren’t always easy to prevent
and between 1867 and 1885 4 towns were defranchesed (lost there right to an MP) due to corrupt practices
