Urbanisation
The process by which an increasing percentage of a country’s population comes to live in towns and cities.
Megacity
Cities with populations over 10 million
Migration
The movement of people from one area to another.
Natural Increase
The birth rate minus the death rate of a populatino
Push factors
A factor that makes people want to leave an area and/or escape a specific situation
Pull factors
A factor that attracts people to an area
Examples of Push Factors
- Farming is hard and poorly paid
- Desertification and soil erosion make farming difficult
- Drought and other climate hazards reduce crop yields
- Farming is often at subsistence level, producing only enough food for the family, leaving nothing to sell
- There are few doctors or hospitals
- Rural areas are isolated due to poor roads
- Schools provide only a very basic education
Examples of Pull Factors
- There are more well-paid jobs
- A high standard of living is possible
- There is a better chance of getting a good quality education
- Public transport is better
- There are better medical facilities with more doctors and hospitals
