Glaciers - Landforms Flashcards
1
Q
corries
A
- north facing hollows in mountain
- snow compresses forming ice
- ice moves downhill, abrasion = deeper, plucking = cuts away at back wall
- deep, semi-circular hollow w/ steep back wall & small lip
- ice melts = tarn
2
Q
arêtes
A
- explain a corrie
- two corries back to back
3
Q
pyramidal peak
A
- explain a corrie
- tre or more corries back to back
4
Q
glacial troughs
A
- glacier fills v-shape valley
- plucking and abrasion deepens and straightens valley
- steep sides, u-shaped valley, wide & flat valley floor
5
Q
hanging valley
A
- tributary glacier erodes, but not as much as main
- when it melts, a little valley is left above the main valley
- a waterfall forms in it
6
Q
lateral moraine
A
moraine on the sides of the glacier
7
Q
medial moraine
A
- moraine in the middle of a glacier
- firmed when two glaciers are combined
8
Q
drumlin
A
- lower lying areas when glaciers have too much moriane
- due to obstacles (like hard rock) the glacier deposits
- when glacier is retreating, it trails over the drumlin
9
Q
erratics
A
material that has been deposited by a glacier
