Q

how does absorption in the large intestine differ from the small intestine

A

The main difference between the small and large intestine is that the small intestine absorbs digested nutrients whereas the large intestine absorbs water from the indigestible residue.

the large intestine can only absorb water and water-soluble vitamins and minerals via osmosis. this is because the large intestine does not contain villi, therefore absorption occurs through a selectively permeable membrane, and only absorbs water and water-soluble vitamins and minerals. there is no digestive enzymes in the large intestine

Q

why is the small intestine fit for absorption

A

has a large surface area

it does this by the small intestine being very long - 6-7m

the inner lining, known as the mucosa, has folds that extend into the interior of the small intestine

the mucosa has small, finger-like projections called villi that extend from the folded surface.

the cells covering the outside of the villi have tiny microscopic projections from the external surfaces. these are microvilli
