spermatogenesis Flashcards
what is spermatogenesis
the formation and development of the spermatozoa
what is spermatozoa
male gametes
also called sperm
singular: spermatozoon
describe the process of spermatogenesis
1) spermatogonium turns into two spermatogonium
2) one of the spermatogonium cycles backs to the top to continue to produce more spermatogonium
3) the second spermatogonium is known as the primary spermatocyle
4) the singular primary spermatocyle undergoes its 1st meiotic division turning it into 2 secondary spermatocyle
5) the 2 secondary spermatocyle undergoes its 2nd meiotic division turning it into 4 spermatids
6) the spermatids then undergo maturation and turn into 4 spermatozoa (sperm)
what is oogenesis
the formation and development of the ovum within the ovary
what is the ova
mature egg cell
singular:ovum
what are polar bodys
a haploid cell produced during oogenesis that contains a nucleus and very little cytoplasm
describe the process of oogenesis
- oogonium turns into 2 oogonium through a process of mitosis
- one of the oogonium will cycle back to the start to continue to make oogonium
- the one that is left is called a primary oocyte and has 92 chromatids
- the oocyte will undergo its 1st meiotic division and produce a secondary oocyte as well as a polar body
- both the secondary oocyte and polar body contain 46 chromatids, except the polar body has a lot less cytoplasm
- both the secondary oocyte and polar bodies will then undergo its 2nd meiotic division and 7. the secondary oocyte will produce an ovum with 23 chromachromes and the polar body will have 2 more polar bodies each containing 23 chromosomes
what are all the different names that are present in oogenesis
oogonium
oocyte
ovum
