Unit A - Parts Of The Brain Flashcards
What is the function of the hindbrain? (3)
Controls basic life activities (breathing, heartbeat, and blood pressure.)
What is the function of the medulla oblongata? (5)
Controls:
heart rate
Breathing
Regulates blood vessel diameter
Swallowing
Coughing
What is the function Cerebellum?
Where does it receive input from?
Receives input from proprioceptors
Coordinates fine motor control, posture, and balance.
What is the function of the pons?
Relays messages from the cerebellum to parts of the cerebrum, midbrain, and hindbrain.
What is the function of the mid-brain?
Relays visual and auditory information between areas of the hindbrain and forebrain
What is the function of the hypothalamus?
controls hormonal regulation and basic survival drives and emotions (sex drive, aggression)
What is the hypothalamus connected to?
Pituitary gland
What is the function of the cerebrum?
Processes ALL Sensory information & controls movement of opposite sides of the body (right hemisphere controls left)
What is the function of the corpus callosum?
Communicates between the cerebral hemispheres.
What is the function of the Cerebral Cortex? (2)
Assembles information FROM ALL SENSES to create the information we are consciously aware of.
Produces our most distinctive traits.
What is the function of the frontal lobe? (4)
Controls voluntary movement (e.x speech), intellect, personality, and conscious thought.
What is the function of the temporal lobe?
Receives auditory information.
What is the function of the parietal lobe?(2)
Receives information about touch and taste (including, pain temperature, and pressure)
What is the function of the Occipital lobe?
Receives visual information.
What is the function of the pituitary gland?
Controls endocrine system, and produces horimones.
