Nicotine

Tar
Thick, dark liquid that forms when tobacco burns
Carbon Monoxide (CO)
Colorless, odorless, poisonous gas produced when tobacco burns
Alveoli
Tiny air sacs in the lungs
Emphysema
A disease that results in the destruction of the alveoli in the lungs
Respiratory System
The organs that supply your blood with oxygen
Trachea
Passageway in your throat that takes air into and out of your lungs
Epiglottis
A flap of tissue in the back of the mouth that keeps food out of your trachea
Bronchi
Two passageways that branch from the trachea, one to each lung
Lungs
Two large organ that exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide
Diaphragm
A large, dome-shaped muscle bellow the lungs that expands and compresses the lungs, enabling breathing
Addiction
A mental or physical need for a drug or other substance
Withdrawal
The unpleasant symptoms that someone experiences when he/she stops using an addictive substance
Psychological Dependence
A person’s belief that he/she needs a drug to feel good or function normally
Physical Dependence
An addiction in which the body develops a chemical need for a drug
Tolerance
The body’s need for larger and larger amounts of a drug to produce the same effect

A group of people for which a product is intended

When a company pays to show its products in the media being used by celebrities

The ability to understand the goals of advertising and the media

Air that has been contaminated by tobacco smoke
Passive Smokers
Nonsmokers who breath in secondhand smoke
Mainstream Smoke
The smoke that is inhaled then exhaled by a smoker
Sidestream Smoke
Smoke that comes from the burning end of a cigarette, pipe, or cigar
