Pollution
Dirty or harmful substances in the environment
Fossil Fuels
Oil, coal, and natural gas that are used to provide energy
Acid Rain
Rain that is more acidic than normal rain
Ozone
A gas made of three oxygen atoms
Smog
A yellow-brown haze that forms when sunlight reacts with air pollution
Groundwater
Water that collects under the earth’s surface
Sewage
Human waste, garbage, detergents, and other household wastes washed down drains and toilets
Landfills
Huge, specially designed pits where waste materials are dumped and buried
Biodegradeable
Easily broken down in the environment
Hazardous Wastes
Human-made liquid, solid, sludge, or radioactive wastes that may endanger human health or the environment
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
An agency of the US Gov’t that is dedicated to protecting the environment
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
A branch of the US Dept. of Labor that protects American workers
Recycle
Change items in some way so that they can be used again
Nonrenewable resources
Substances that cannot be replaced once they are used
Conservation
The saving of resources
