How do fungi reproduce and with what?
All fungi can reproduce asexually. Most fungi can reproduce sexually as well. Fungi reproduce with spores.
What is the life cycle of a fungus?
-Fungi start as spores, tiny single-celled structures that are fertilized and ready to grow.
- When a spore lands in a favorable spot (ex. Dead tree) it begins to grow.
- fungi can easily live for many years. Some upwards of 500.
- All fungi reproduce asexually, most can reproduce sexually.
Fungal tissue structure
- cell wall, made of chitin
- hyphae, thread like filaments that Branch and intertwine
- mycelium, Large net of hyphae
What is the ecological role of fungi?
Fungi are decomposers. They decompose plants and grow by making more and more hyphae in the dead thing they are eating.
What are some ways fungi helps man?
Humans eat mushrooms.
Yeast is used to make bread and beer.
One species is the source of penicillin.
What are some ways fungi harms man?
- athlete’s foot
- Chestnut blight
- ergotism
- several mushrooms are poisonous
Three main types of fungi
Mushroom
Mold
Yeast
Three Phyla
Zygomycota- molds
Ascomycota- Sac Fungi
Basidiomycota- club fungi (mushrooms)
How do fungi eat?
Fungi eat by producing enzymes which digest their food outside of them. Then they absorb the nutrients.
What is the symbiosis of fungi?
Fungi combined with either algae or cyanobacteria to form lichens. (Lichens gauge air quality)
