Unit 8 - Body Cavities, Organs And Membranes Flashcards
What are body cavities
Enclosed spaces that house and protect organs
Dorsal body cavity (back)
- Cranial (head) cavity- brain
- skull forms this - Vertebral cavity- spinal cord
Ventral body cavity (belly)
- Thoracic (chest) cavity
- pericardial cavity - heart
- pleural cavity - lungs - Abdominal cavity- digestive organs
- Pelvic cavity- houses urinary bladder, reproductive organs and rectum
How many tissue types do organs consist of
- 2 or more
- but many contain all 4 major tissue types
How many tissue types to membranes consist of
1 or 2
- connective tissue with or without an epithelial tissue attached
- line the inner and outer surfaces of the body and organs
membrane types
- Mucous membranes
- Serous membranes
- Synovial membranes
- Cutaneous membranes
Mucous membranes
- line cavities of organs that open directly to the body exterior
- mucosa of the digestive, respiratory, urinary and reproductive systems
2 layers of mucous membranes
- Epithelial layer
- Laminate propria
Epithelial layer of mucous membrane
- top layer
- in contact with the lumen of the organ
- avascular
- many have goblet cells
- lots of villi
- ex. Line digestive tract
Lamina propria of mucous membranes
- bottom layer
- connective tissue layer that connects the epithelial tissue to the wall of the organ
- made of loose Areolar connective tissue and therefore vascular
- nourishes epithelial cells
Serous membrane
- lines body cavities that DO NOT open up to the exterior (closed cavities)
- ex. Abdominal and thoracic cavities (lungs)
- covers external surfaces of organs in these cavities
- double layered membranes with each layer composed of a simple epithelium bound to an Areolar connective tissue
Parietal layer of serous membrane
Against cavity wall
Visceral layer of serous membranes
- against organs
What does the epithelial layer of the serous membrane secrete
- serous fluid into the serous cavity (slippery)
Pericardium
Heart
Pleura
Lung
- parietal and visceral pleura
Peritoneum
Abdominal organs
Synovial membranes
- in joints
- Areolar connective tissue, no epithelium
- only one tissue type therefore NOT AN ORGAN
Cutaneous membranes
Skin
- epithelium= stratified squamous (named the epidermis)
- connective tissue= Areolar and dense irregular (named in dermis
