Q

Dorsal body cavity (back)

A
  1. Cranial (head) cavity- brain
    - skull forms this
  2. Vertebral cavity- spinal cord

Q

Ventral body cavity (belly)

A
  1. Thoracic (chest) cavity
    - pericardial cavity - heart
    - pleural cavity - lungs
  2. Abdominal cavity- digestive organs
  3. Pelvic cavity- houses urinary bladder, reproductive organs and rectum

Q

Mucous membranes

A
  • line cavities of organs that open directly to the body exterior
  • mucosa of the digestive, respiratory, urinary and reproductive systems

Q

Epithelial layer of mucous membrane

A
  • top layer
  • in contact with the lumen of the organ
  • avascular
  • many have goblet cells
  • lots of villi
  • ex. Line digestive tract

10
Q

Lamina propria of mucous membranes

A
  • bottom layer
  • connective tissue layer that connects the epithelial tissue to the wall of the organ
  • made of loose Areolar connective tissue and therefore vascular
  • nourishes epithelial cells

Q

Serous membrane

A
  • lines body cavities that DO NOT open up to the exterior (closed cavities)
  • ex. Abdominal and thoracic cavities (lungs)
  • covers external surfaces of organs in these cavities
  • double layered membranes with each layer composed of a simple epithelium bound to an Areolar connective tissue

Q

Pleura

A

Lung
- parietal and visceral pleura

17
Q

Peritoneum

A

Abdominal organs

18
Q

Synovial membranes

A
  • in joints
  • Areolar connective tissue, no epithelium
  • only one tissue type therefore NOT AN ORGAN
19
Q

Cutaneous membranes

A

Skin
- epithelium= stratified squamous (named the epidermis)
- connective tissue= Areolar and dense irregular (named in dermis
