Battle of Monitor and Merrimac
March 9, 1862
Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Virginia
This was the first battle between two ironclad ships neither ships could sink the other it ended in a draw
Ironclad ships were used to fight on bays and rivers, former of modern ways
Fall of Vicksburg
March through July 1863
Vicksburg Mississippi along the Mississippi River
I love empowerment of key confederate port-city. Union victory and turning point of the war.
Outcome for the north provided the union access to the Mississippi River, keeping it from the south
South couldn’t get money and goods they needed. Split south into 2
Hardships faced by South during the war
Didn’t have great weapons, smaller population, less funding, relied heavily on trade, couldn’t export to Europe due to blockage =no money, had to print their own money and not everyone harbored it, unexperienced
“March to sea” General
Spring 1864
Tennessee
Show me March sales from Tennessee with 100,000 troops to take Atlanta Georgia and knock out an important Rail road link
The north were able to hold Atlanta under siege. It shows their progress defeating the south
Southerners were upset with the length of the war
Bloodiest one day battle/ battle of antietam
September 4, 1862
Sharpsburg Maryland
It was the bloodiest single day battle of the Civil War and US history. Union won.
For the North it provided a success needed to keep Europe from supporting the Confederacy.
For the south many went missing were injured or died. Realize support from Europe was not coming
