James Oglethorpe was the founder Of Georgia and he used it as a refuge for London’s indebted prisoners in as a buffer between the southern colonies, and the attack from Florida.

John Rolfe was an early English settlers in Virginia and had the first successful growth and export of tobacco. He was also the husband of Pochahontus.

William Penn founded a colony in Pennsylvania for Quakers and it became a model for freedom and tolerance.

Education important to wealthy, but due to distance between plantations, parents hired tutors to teach boys academic subjects.
Most often went to England to finish schooling. Governess taught girls reading, writing, math, how to run a household, I had to find a husband
Virginia Dash 100% of upperclassman were literate, 90% of laborers, 25% of upper-class women, and 1% of slaves could sign their names.
Tobacco was also use this money at one time and introduced at Jamestown settlement
Social characteristics of the southern colonies
Virginia it was general assembly/house of Burgesses
Maryland = created a government where he made laws with the constant of the Freeman landowners in the colony. A legislative assembly was created to consent to the laws passed by the governor. There were two houses: one of the Freeman and the second consisted of the governor and his counsel.
North Carolina = Lord’s proprietor then royal colony.
South Carolina equals royal colony Road by fundamental constitutional Caroline.
Georgia = royal colony
Southern colonies geographic
Crops grew well due to long growing season with hot summers
Many colonist set up along Atlantic coastal plain which contributed to fertile soil

Merchants and traders and agriculture of wheat, barley, and oats

Religion = Quakers, Jews, Mennonites, Lutherans, Dutch, Calvinists, Presbyterians
About 1/2 of adults could sign their name. Decision about education left up to the parents

Delaware = own assembly but shared governor with Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania – representative legislative with elected officials
New Jersey = royal colony
New York = citizens given the limited self government, then to governor, and then royal colony
